How Your Windows Can Affect Your Personal Health

Did you know the windows in your home can have a dramatic impact on your health and the health of other members of your household? By maintaining your windows and watching for signs of trouble, you can avoid some of the problems that can occur when your windows are  dirty, leaky, blocking natural light from the sun.

Dust, Dirt & Mold on Windows Contribute to Poor Health

Windows that are poor fitting, poorly installed or just poor quality may have leaks that can lead to problems like mold and mildew. Meanwhile, windows that are just not cleaned frequently enough can build up a good amount of dust. Both of these problems can contribute to poor indoor air quality.

Many health problems can be the result of these issues, including asthma, allergies and other respiratory disorders. This could be impacting the health of you and other members of your family.

What You Can Do:

  • Inspect your windows on a regular basis for water stains.
  • Get repairs or window replacements when it’s appropriate.
  • Clean your windows on a regular basis to eliminate dust from the glass and sill.

Open Windows as Weather Warms to Improve Indoor Air Quality

Air inside the home is often polluted with dust, fungal spores, chemicals and smoke from cigarettes or woodfires. Since we spend most of our time indoors in our homes, this poor air quality can affect our health in ways we don’t even realize.

In fact, some people experience symptoms of illness because of their indoor air quality. This problem is known as “sick building syndrome.”

One way that you can avoid this problem is by opening windows in your home to let in fresh air from the outside. If your windows don’t operate easily, or at all, consider getting them fixed or replaced so you can easily open them to let the fresh air in.

If you’re installing new windows in your home, consider installing casement-style windows, which open the maximum amount and can “catch” a breeze to let in as much fresh air as possible.

Keep Windows Unblocked from Sun to Soak Up Vitamin D

Your body makes its own vitamin D when it’s exposed to the sun. One way that you can get your daily quota of sunlight is by spending time near the windows of your house as the sunlight streams through. If your windows are blocked, however, this can cut back on your sunlight exposure. Keep your windows clean to let in the sunlight, and consider pruning shrubs just outside the window that are blocking your windows and keeping your house in shade.
