One of the major benefits of renovating your New Jersey or New York home with the right custom-crafted replacement windows is that they fit the opening left when your old windows are removed perfectly. In almost every setting, you can either go back with the same style window, or chose one of the other Renewal by Andersen of New Jersey & New York Metro standard or specialty window styles to enhance the functionality and appearance of your home.
Although we’ve built millions of replacement windows in almost every size and shape, sometimes size influences which window style is the best fit for your home.
Here are three reasons you’ll want to consider size carefully before deciding whether to install the same style, or switch things up.
Reason #1: Replacing a Picture Window to Add Ventilation.
Picture windows are the style of choice when it comes to enjoying spectacular vistas and sunsets. If you have enough operable windows in the room with the view, replacing an over-sized window (larger than 9′ X 8′) with an inoperable picture window, or a combination of several individual window units, often makes more sense. Why?
Although over-sized casement windows have a frame substantial enough to manage the weight of the glass in an extra large window, a single nine foot wide double-hung window is less conventional, and may be difficult for some people to open and close. Three-panel sliders with a stationary middle pane, are also a great option in rooms with a view that need a bit more ventilation. Be sure to talk to your replacement window specialist about width and height limitations that may influence style performance.
Reason #2: Window Size Determines the Base Price
It’s logical to assume a 4′ X 2′ awning window will generally cost more than a 3′ X 2′ awning window unit. Larger windows require more building materials. While the price for different styles of the same size is fairly consistent, some styles are more or less costly. For example, specialty shapes – trapezoids, triangles, half-circle windows and equal-leg polygons, will typically cost more than a double-hung or casement window close to the same size, even though they are fixed windows that don’t require opening hardware, insect screens or special locks.
When you are thinking about adding operable solutions, customized with patterned glass, exclusive hardware and optional insect screen upgrades, it is important to consider size as a starting point, and then figure out which style is a best-fit for your budget and your lifestyle.
Reason #3: Size, Style & Configuration Affect Comfort & Decorating Goals
Size isn’t always defined only by simple height and width measurements. Take bay and bow window configurations as an example. Both bow and bay windows are constructed with multiple individual window units joined together. A deep bow provides enough “new” interior space to add a window seat, create a small lounging space or designate an intimate dining nook.
Designing a functional bow window for your new living space means you may want a row of smaller (shorter) casement or awning windows mulled beneath your larger center plate glass panel to increase air flow, or opt for large double-hung windows on the sides. The overall size of the bay or bow primarily depends on the side window units, since the center panel (or panels) are often the exact width of your current windows.
