Summers in the United States have included some type of Father’s Day celebrations for more than a century, although there is some dispute about when and where the first party happened.
There are anecdotal reports that the first ceremony to honor fathers was held at a Methodist church in Fairmont, West Virginia in early July, 1908, to memorialize more than 300 men who lost their lives in a mine explosion. Another account claims the first official Father’s Day celebration was held in Spokane, Washington in 1910 to honor a civil war veteran who raised six children as a single parent. Everyone seems to agree that President Woodrow Wilson held a family Father’s Day party in 1916 and President Coolidge bestowed the national title in 1924. But, even though President Lyndon Johnson officially set aside the third Sunday in June as the universal day to honor our fathers, Congress did not take action to make the date permanent until 1972.
