Cleaning Your Double-Hung Windows

Replacement Window CleaningFirst, if your Double-Hung window has removable interior grilles, lift them away from their clips and set them aside. You’ll replace the grilles back into their clips once you’ve finished cleaning your window.

DO: Clean your grille after it has been removed from the window. You can do this with a quick dry-dust followed by wiping each grille down with a damp cloth.

Once your grilles have been removed, unlock your window and raise the lower frame at least two inches. This will prevent damage when you pull the window out of its position. Next, slide the wash-assist tabs at the top of the window down until they are between the sash and the frame of the lower window. Firmly pull the top of the window towards you. There will be some resistance.  Once the window has been released, but sure to rest it on a chair or some other supportive structure.

DON’T: Let the window hang without proper support. It should be held at no greater than a 90-degree angle.

To bring down the upper window, raise the wash-assist tabs back to the top of the frame and lower the window. Once you can reach the top of the lowered window, push the tilt-wash tabs towards the middle of the frame and pull the window forward as you had done with the lower window. It will rest safely on that lowered window. This will allow you to clean both the interior and exterior glass.

Wipe away the most obvious dirt from the glass with a soft dry cloth. Follow it up with a cleaning solution to be applied with another soft cloth. Recommended cleaning solutions for your Renewal by Andersen windows include mild soapy water, white vinegar-and-water or a liquid window cleaner. Once you’re satisfied with the cleanliness of the glass, remove the cleaning solution with a clean cloth.

DO: Try to avoid touching your clean glass. You’ll undo all your hard work.

DON’T: Use anything abrasive when cleaning your glass. It will cause damage.

To put your Double-Hung windows back to their rightful positions, raise the upper window back into the frame and push it carefully into place. The click means you’ve done it right. First lower the window an inch, and then lift it back into its top position. Repeat the process with the lower window, and then fasten the lock to ensure that both sashes are in place.

Follow these simple steps and you can be sure that your Renewal by Andersen of Central New Jersey Double-Hung Windows will be in top working order for years to come.
